AHIMA Leader Kathleen Frawley Dies at 63

I’m shocked by this sad news.

AHIMA Board President Kathleen Frawley Dies June 28


Kathleen Frawley, board president and chair of the American Health Information Management Association, died on Friday, June 28 at age 63.

An AHIMA member for more than three decades and vice president of legislative and public policy services for the association from 1992 to 2000, Frawley most recently was a professor and chair of the HIM technology program at DeVry University’s campus in North Brunswick, N.J.

The family has announced it will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on July 1 and 2 at Shook’s Cedar Grove Funeral Home in Cedar Grove, N.J. (shookscedargrove.com), with the funeral on July 3 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Verona, N.J.

AHIMA will establish a scholarship in Kathleen Frawley’s name to honor her contributions. “Kathleen had an inspiring and unwavering belief in the importance of health information management and how AHIMA members could lead the profession,” says AHIMA CEO Lynne Thomas Gordon. “She touched the lives of so many of her colleagues in HIM, AHIMA members and her students. She will be missed by the entire AHIMA family.”

Angela Kennedy, president/chair elect for 2014, will immediately succeed Frawley, who began her one-year term in January.

    Bringing her vision of “Dream Big…and Believe” to life.

    Kathleen A. Frawley was passionate about health information management and was a dedicated AHIMA leader. She was proud of AHIMA’s 85-year history, and also was excited about the future of the HIM profession. “Dream Big…and Believe” was her AHIMA presidency theme and she encouraged us all to believe in ourselves and to believe in AHIMA.

    To honor Kathleen’s contributions to AHIMA and the advancement of the HIM profession, we have established the Kathleen A. Frawley Memorial Endowed Scholarship fund to support the Student Merit Scholarship program. The goal is to raise $85,000 in gifts by the 85th AHIMA Convention and Exhibit in Atlanta, Georgia, in October 2013. Please help build upon Kathleen’s dream by making a contribution today.
